Tertiary Learning Analysis of Vietnam Students

Barry Ramsay

Abstract

This study investigates learning approaches of Vietnamese in an English “Western” environment using literature review and an adaption of Biggs (1987a) Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ). It was found that no research, at least in English existed, therefore parallel are drawn from a Western perspective, acknowledging a bias. An attempt is also made to debunk the notion that tertiary education is better served by lowering academic standards to allow the bar to be lowered for entry to university study. The study showed that the Vietnamese students in this survey as a group were adaptive to both Surface and Deep approaches and keen to get ahead, same as their western compatriots.
